How to Bend Rebar

Rebar is used around the home to provide structural reinforcement to concrete pads and driveways. It is laid during the excavation of the ground where the concrete is to be poured, and the concrete poured over it. This helps prevent the concrete from shifting or sinking due to cracks. Rebar must occasionally be bent in order to make it fit within the concrete pad. This is accomplished using a long length of pipe and a bench vise.

Instructions

    • 1

Estimate the approximate curve necessary for reinforcing the concrete. For curved paths, a more gentle curve may be necessary. To make the rebar fit within a confined space, a bend of 90 degrees or more may be necessary.

    • 2

Secure the rebar in the bench vise tightly and ensure that the vise itself is securely fastened to the work bench. For bending the entire length of rebar, the bar will have to be removed and repositioned several times throughout the process. For bending one section at a specified angle, estimate the amount of rebar that is to be bent and fix the rebar into the vise at this point.

    • 3

Slide the steel pipe over the end of the rebar to the point at which it is to be bent. Hold the very end of the pipe and pull toward you to bend the rebar to the necessary angle. For gradual curves, draw the pipe toward you only as much as necessary to begin the curve, then loosen and readjust the rebar within the vise to make the second bend, pulling the rebar slightly closer the second time to account for deflection of the rod. Continue this until the curve is the approximate shape that you need.
