How to Use Quikrete for Post Holes

Dig a hole that is three times the width of your post, using a shovel or a spade.

Make it deep enough that it covers a third of the length of the post. For most posts you won't need a hole more than 3 feet deep.

Dig a larger dish-shaped hole and insert a concrete form tube if the soil is loose or sandy. The form holds the post securely in place and is only necessary for loose soil where the walls of the hole cannot be packed firmly.

Pack the sides of the hole with the shovel so that the walls are firm.

Pour gravel to a depth of 6 inches into the bottom and pack it down using a post so that it is level.

Place the post in the hole and attach angled metal braces to two adjoining sides of the post using one screw for each brace.

Hammer a stake into the ground close to the bottom end of each metal brace.

Check that the post is vertically level, or plumb, using a carpenter's level.

Fasten the braces to the stakes using wood screws.

Mix the Quikrete according to the label directions, which will also tell you how much Quikrete and water you'll require for the size hole you're using.

Pour the mix into the hole so that the gravel is covered.

Work the mixture in and around the gravel quickly using a shovel and then fill the remainder of the hole.

Wait for the surface water to evaporate and then smooth the surface of the Quikrete with your shovel so that the edges are tapered downward.

This is so rain water will flow away from the post.

Check the post with a level to make sure it is still plumb.

Wait 20 minutes for the concrete to set.

Do not hang heavy objects from posts for at least four hours.
