How to Make Cedar Not Turn Grey

Cedar wood is a durable member of the softwood family, often used for outdoor furniture and fences. If left untreated, naturally red cedar wood will age to a silvery gray color. Exposure to the sun dries out the outer layer of the wood and turns it gray. Although some cedar fans appreciate the gray timber, others want to keep the fresh red appearance. It's possible. By treating the wood with a stain that includes a UV sealant you can maintain cedar's beautiful red hue.

Re-apply a second coat of stain if your cedar is particularly rough. Use a rag to wipe away any excess stain that the wood cannot absorb. Allow the stain to dry.
