How to Install Horizontal Bamboo Patio Blinds

Summers are for sitting on the patio, enjoying cool drinks and the outdoors. During those times of direct sun, however, the patio can start to feel like a sauna. Cut the glare and the heat with patio blinds. Installed along the patio roof's overhang, blinds drop to cover openings, cutting the glare and the heat. Homeowners often choose horizontal, Roman-style bamboo blinds for patios because of the natural wood quality and the ease with which they fold up and down. Bamboo blinds typically come with brackets, bolts and nuts for installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the patio opening where the blind will be installed. Mark the center point of the opening on the inside of the overhead fascia board. Measure the bamboo head rail and mark the center point on the top.

    • 2

Hold the blinds in place with the head rail on the inside of the fascia board. Line up the two center point marks. Place a level on top of the head rail and adjust it for evenness. Make marks 1 to 2 inches in from the ends on the fascia just above the head rail. Do not place the marks farther in than the ending points of the bracket slots on the ends of the head rail.

    • 3

Set down the head rail. Place the brackets on the fascia board, with the upper arms of the brackets on top and lined up with the outer pencil marks. Mark the screw holes. Move the brackets to drill pilot holes, then screw the brackets to the fascia.

Return the blinds to the fascia board so the head rail fits snugly under the upper arms of the brackets. Insert the bolts down through the bracket holes, then through the head rail slots. Tighten the nuts over the bolt ends from the underside of the head rail.

Attach any end caps that came with the blinds. End caps often connect with hook-and-loop tape.
