How to Recondition a Wood Deck That Has Been Pressure Treated

Pressure-treated lumber is used for deck building because the wood withstands wear and tear far better than non-treated wood. However, this wood is by no means impervious to damage, weathering and mold, and must still be cleaned and sealed regularly to keep the wood in ideal condition. If you have been lax on your maintenance responsibilities with your pressure treated deck, you can restore the deck and seal it to prevent future damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all furniture and fixtures from your wood deck. Sweep off the deck or spray it off with a garden hose to remove surface detritus such as dirt, leaves and branches.

    • 2

Mix oxygen bleach with water in a bucket, following specific product instructions regarding dilution rates. Oxygen bleach contains mold and mildew killing capabilities similar to chlorine bleach, but will not change the color of your deck.

    • 3

Soak the bristles of a stiff-bristle scrub brush in the oxygen bleach mixture and scrub firmly at your deck. The scrubbing will force the oxygen bleach into the top layers of the wood, removing dirt, mildew, stains and also some of the effects of sun and wind weathering.

    • 4

Work in small areas of your deck, generally only within your immediate reach. Once you have cleaned one area, rinse it well with clean water from a hose. Allowing the cleaning solution to dry on the deck can cause staining. Continue to clean and rinse until you've taken care of the whole surface.

    • 5

Seal the surface of the pressure treated wood with a sealant designed specifically for pressure treated or exterior wood. Read all product information to ensure that it contains mildewcides and ultraviolet or UV protection, to prevent fading and weathering on your deck.

    • 6

Apply a single, thin coat of sealant with a paintbrush or roller. Once the first coat dries fully, apply a second thin coat. Allow the final coat to dry for at least 24 hours before returning the deck to use.
