How to Build Lattice Work

Lattice work can be created for privacy and to create shade for outdoor areas of your home, such as your patio. A lattice panel is made of lightweight strips of wood or vinyl. However, you will require framing or wood posts to attach the lattice. To do this you need to determine how many lattice panels are required for the project. You can create your own lattice with materials that you can find at your local home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of each side of the patio with the tape measure. Multiply the width by the length to obtain the square footage of each side. Add the square footage of each side together.

    • 2

Multiply the width by the length of a 4-foot by 8-foot lattice panel. The result is the square footage of the lattice panel, which is 32 square feet.

    • 3

Divide the square footage in step 1 by 32 to calculate the number of lattice panels you will need for the patio.

    • 4

Measure and cut 1 1 /2-inch boards to the width measurement in step 1 with the circular saw. Subtract 1 1/2-inches from the height and cut 1 1/2-inch boards to this measurement.

    • 5

Assemble the 1 1/2-inch boards together to form a frame. Place the pieces cut to the height every four feet. Secure the wood together with screws, using the power drill. Repeat this step for each side of your patio.

    • 6

Place the sections of framing on each side of the patio. Secure the sections of framing to the patio with screws. Attach the sides of the frame to each other with screws.

    • 7

Place a 4-foot by 8-foot lattice panel against the frame. Secure the lattice to the framing with staples by using the staple gun. Repeat this process to attach the remaining lattice panels to the frame.
