How to Use Muriactic Acid

Muriatic acid is a form of hydrogen chloride that may damage clothing, plastic and almost anything it contacts. Often used for cleaning concrete or outdoor masonry for paint preparation or removal of mineral deposits, using muriatic acid requires safety clothing, eye and hand protection and rubber boots. Also, proper ventilation is required; therefore, muriatic acid is not recommended for indoor use.

Instructions

    • 1

Dress in appropriate safety gear, including rubber boots, chemical-resistant gloves and goggles. Make sure no areas of your skin are exposed.

    • 2

Place a box of baking soda close to the area where you are working. This neutralizes the muriatic acid if a spill occurs.

    • 3

Dilute the muriatic acid with water in a plastic bucket. Add 10 parts water to a bucket and 1 part muriatic acid.

    • 4

Apply the mixture with a stiff brush or sprayer recommended for use with acid. Avoid spraying the acid if there is wind.

    • 5

Rinse the area with clean water until the muriatic acid is gone. Neutralize any remaining acid by spraying it with a mixture of 1 cup of ammonia and 1 gallon of water.
