How to Install Sun Sails

Sun sails are an economical alternative to covered patios and awnings. Also known as shade sails, they usually are made from canvas and synthetic cloths. These stylish accessories attach to houses or posts and provide shade for patios, decks, gardens, playgrounds and other outdoor living areas that need protection from the sun. Sun sails come in triangular and square shapes and can be purchased in a variety of colors that complement many outdoor decorating endeavors.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where you will install the sun sail. Make sure there is enough room for the sail and something to attach it to.

    • 2

Figure out how to angle the sail. A sail will need a lower point somewhere so that water can run off. Install a square-shaped sail with two diagonal corners lower than the other two. If you have a triangular sail, place one end higher than the other two.

    • 3

Decide what posts or attachments to use. Sun sails can be attached to a wall of a house, trees, pergolas, terraces or posts in the ground.

    • 4

Lay your sail over the area where you will put it up.

    • 5

Dig holes about 16 inches wide by 4 inches deep. Pour gravel into the holes, set your posts and fill with concrete.

    • 6

Secure hooks or grommets to the posts. If you are using a side of house or other surface, attach the hooks or grommets there, too.

    • 7

Attach your sail to the fixing accessories you installed.
