Measure the span between the deck boards and the bottom of the railing with a tape measure. Divide the measurement by five and determine the height of each cable. Measure up from the floor and make four marks at equal intervals on each of the railing posts. Center the marks on the inside face of each railing.
Place a 3/4-inch wood boring drill bit into a power drill and set the tip at the center mark on the wood and drill a hole straight through the surface. Repeat this step with all the other marks in the railing.
Feed one end of a cable through all of the boards to form the first railing. On the outside edge of one of the ends, bend the cable with adjustable pliers and clip the end of a cable clamp over the loop. Ensure that the cable end is facing inward toward the post and tighten the clamp down with a wrench securely to hold it in place.
Pull the other end of the cable taut and attach a second cable clamp; secure the clamp while continuing to pull the cable tight. Release the clamp and pull the cable tighter if required before securing the clamp.
Repeat the process of feeding, tightening and clamping the cable through all drilled holes to form the rest of the railings. Cut excess cable from each railing with a hacksaw.
