What to Do With a Large Porch

If your home has a small porch, decorating may be easy because there often isn't room for more than a rocking chair and some potted plants. However, when your home has a large porch, there is much more space to cover, so coming up with an attractive design can be a challenge. If you are stuck on what to do with your porch, think of it as an extension of your house and decorate it accordingly. Add classic accessories as well, and you might be surprised at how much use you get out of the outdoor space.
  1. Create Distinct Areas

    • When you have a large porch, it helps to break up the space into smaller areas for specific purposes. Create a seating area for entertaining by placing a love seat and chairs in one spot. In another area, showcase plants and flowers that you've grown by setting up tiered plant stands or setting pots on the floor and railing. Add a small fountain to create a soothing retreat for quiet reflection or meditation. If you and your family enjoy games, set up an outdoor chess or checkers set in another spot. Artists in the family may also enjoy having an easel in an area of the porch, so they can be inspired by the natural scenery that surrounds them.

    Incorporate Color

    • On a smaller porch, using too many decorating colors can create a busy, chaotic look. However, with a larger porch, you have the luxury of choosing several shades for your décor, so the porch has a more interesting look. Start by painting the railing and floor two different shades. For a classic look, leave the flooring with a natural wood finish and paint the railing in a bright shade of white. Bolder colors work as well, so you can opt for red or blue railing instead. If your porch flooring is made of stone, tile or concrete, select a railing color that complements the tones in the material. Incorporate additional colors through furniture cushions and accessories as well. Be sure to take your home's exterior color into account when choosing shades for the porch so your home's entryway has a cohesive look.

    Hang a Swing

    • A swing is a classic porch accessory. Choose from several swing styles, such as contemporary, Adirondack or rustic. Porch swings are available in several materials as well, including wood, wicker and plastic. Or opt for an oversized swing that fits more than two people so family members can enjoy the swing together. However, if you prefer a different look, install several swinging chairs that accommodate only one person each.

    Include a Rug

    • If your porch has a concrete floor, the large expanse of plain gray concrete can sometimes make the space appear cold and drab. An outdoor rug is an ideal accessory because it adds color and pattern that instantly brightens the space. It is also an effective option for any porch flooring that may be showing signs of wear and tear. A rug can also anchor a seating area and help make the space feel separate from other parts of the porch.
