Spray-on Waterproof Decking

Decks are a beautiful addition to any home, but they require regular maintenance to keep their attractiveness. Waterproofing a deck with stains or sealants is one way to make maintenance much easier and add some added aesthetic appeal to the deck. Spray-on waterproof stains and sealants offer protection from the elements. There are different types of waterproof decking to use that come with their own benefits.
  1. Benefits of Waterproofing a Deck

    • Applying spray-on waterproof sealant or stains offers a variety of benefits. The foremost benefit is that it makes a deck waterproof. This is important for a deck because, if the wood in a deck absorbs too much moisture, it is subject to rot and mildew. Sometimes the water within the wood evaporates, but too much absorption and evaporation will lead to the wood bending and breaking. Cold weather and frost are other contributing factors to wood breaking and bending. Another benefit of waterproofing a deck includes UV protection. UV rays bleach the deck, making it gray and unappealing.

Different Types of Spray-on Waterproof Decking

    • There are two options to use when waterproofing a deck: sealants and stains. Sealants offer all the benefits of waterproofing a deck in addition to protecting it from other harsh elements. The one drawback to sealants is that they are clear and do not normally offer UV protection. Stains contain pigments that color the deck to make it more visually appealing. Though all sealants come with most of the benefits of waterproofing and protection, some stains offer the same benefits of the sealant with the addition of UV protection. The most well-rounded waterproofing finish will use a stain with water repellent, so the finish acts as both a sealant and a stain. Some stains, however, color the deck only, providing no waterproofing element; so inspect what you're buying carefully to ensure it does both.

    Applying Spray-on Waterproof Decking

    • The best method to applying stains or sealants is to spray it on. This allows the person applying the sealant or stain to evenly coat the deck to make it visually appealing while protecting the entire area. Applying spray-on waterproofing requires a clean deck, so your first step is to remove loose objects and equipment off the deck, then thoroughly sweep. At this point you want to repair any damaged wood before continuing. Afterward, scrub the deck to remove small particles and any bacterial organisms. Once all of this is done, apply the sealant or stain evenly throughout the deck with a spraying apparatus. Follow the sprayer manufacturer's directions for this step. You might want to mask off adjacent areas to keep from spraying the stain anywhere other than the deck. Work from top to bottom, starting with rails and upper posts, then the deck surface, then the trim and framing.

    Deck Maintenance

    • Depending on whether you apply a sealant or a stain, you may have to apply it at different intervals. Sealants last up to two years without reapplication. Reapplication is simple and lasts different amounts of time depending on the deck's size. Reapply stains with water repellent no more than every two years. Regular inspection is important as well to prevent cracks, bending or mildew growth.
