How to Paint Cement Porches

Painting a cement porch provides a colorful change from the drabness of concrete, but to do so successfully involves preparing the cement before applying any primer or paint. Concrete has a porous surface and requires dirt removal and a thorough washing to provide a clean canvas on which to paint. Once clean, choose any color you wish to spruce up a dull concrete porch.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand at one end of the porch with a garden hose and spray dirt and grime from the porch using back and forth motions. Work your way from one end of the porch to the other. For extremely dirty porches, squirt liquid dish soap onto three to four places on the porch and scrub them with a broom. Rinse the soap completely from the porch and allow it to dry.

    • 2

Place old sheets on top of any foliage around the porch. Apply primer starting at the back or at one end of the porch. Pour the primer into a paint pan and apply it to a paint roller.

    • 3

Roll the primer onto the concrete. Work your way across the cement porch, covering the top of the porch completely with the primer. Avoid boxing yourself into a corner and work towards an open area of the porch. Apply primer to the cement or concrete blocks below and along the sides of the porch, if desired. Use a 4-inch paint brush to apply primer to these areas. Allow the primer to dry for one hour.

Pour the paint into a paint pan. Wet your roller with the paint and apply it in the same manner as the primer. If the cement requires a second coat, allow the first coat to dry for one to two hours before applying the second. Allow the paint to dry overnight before placing any furniture on top of it.
