How to Paint a Porch Blue

A porch ceiling painted blue may remind the owner of the sky. Some theories say a blue porch ceiling may serve to extend daylight or act as a bug-repellent. In the southern states, blue porch ceilings have been popular for generations. Some may choose blue for other sections of the porch, including the floor or railings. Consider the style of your home and the natural-light settings to select the best blue hue for your porch. Some designers suggest a darker blue matches a contemporary home while a lighter blue suits a traditional style.

Instructions

    • 1

Coordinate the shades of blue for your porch. If you plan to paint the porch floor one hue of blue but the porch railings and ceiling another, make sure the blues complement each other. Depending on the style of your home and size of your porch, you may choose only one shade, such as a light sky blue. Choose shades of blue that complement your siding, shutters and doors and decide which areas to paint blue.

    • 2

Purchase paint for your porch at a local hardware store. If painting concrete, select latex, oil or epoxy paint. Latex is likely to be the least costly and oil the most costly. You can find several paints specifically designed for concrete. If your porch ceilings and railings are made of wood, select a latex paint.

    • 3

Sand the porch, wherever necessary, to achieve a smooth surface. As you will be using shades of blue, if the porch is not smooth before painting, you may be more likely to see bumps and ridges than with earth tones. If the concrete is newly poured and the porch railings are unstained, you do not need to sand. Caulk any cracks or holes to prevent moisture seepage.

    • 4

Clean the porch thoroughly using a hose, sponges, brushes and soapy water. You can also use products designed for concrete or wood to remove layers of dirt and debris. Paint is more likely to adhere to a clean surface. Allow the surface to dry before applying any paints or primers.

Apply a coat of primer to the porch. After the primer dries, apply two coats of blue paint. Wait for paint to dry between coats and use paint liberally but smooth out any excessively thick drops of paint. Depending on porch size, use 4-inch brushes or rollers to apply the paint. Apply designs with a smaller brush.
