How to Finish a Mahogany Porch

The final step in building -- or rebuilding -- a mahogany porch is to apply a finish to the wood. This protects your investment of both time and money and keeps the wood looking good for years to come. As long as water puddles on your porch, the finish is still good. Once it starts to sink into the mahogany, it is time to strip and reapply the finish. Supplies needed for this project are available at many home improvement and hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the porch of any furniture and remove any loose debris. Sand the porch with the 80 grit sandpaper. Go with the grain while sanding, otherwise the marks of sanding across the grain will show up in your finish.

    • 2

Sweep away all sawdust to prepare the porch for the stain or paint. Cover landscaping next to the porch with the plastic drop cloths.

    • 3

Apply the stain or paint to the mahogany. Roll in the direction of the grain to ensure even coverage. You do not have to use the sprayer along the grain, because the sprayer continuously provides an even amount of paint or stain. Use rags to clean up any spills as they occur, before they get a chance to set. Use the paintbrush to get paint or stain into hard-to-reach areas, such as along railings or steps.

    • 4

Let the porch dry completely. Add another coat if desired. Remove the plastic from the landscaping.
