Options for a Floating Deck

Unlike a traditional deck that is connected to your house, a floating deck is a freestanding structure that allows you the flexibility to place it anywhere in your yard. Because it is so versatile, there are a variety of design and accessory possibilities for a floating deck. Consider the size and terrain of your yard and how you plan to use the deck to help you narrow down the options and figure out the best design for your floating deck.
  1. Change the Shape

    • While most floating decks have a square or rectangular shape, you can highlight the structure and add visual interest to the yard by using a different shape. The size and layout of your property may determine which shapes are possible, but an octagonal floating deck is an ideal option for creating a small, intimate deck. Line the outside edges with benches or planters to give the deck a more decorative look or simply add a table and chairs set. If you want deck space in your yard for multiple purposes, such as an area for the grill and separate space for the hot tub, consider building two or three octagons and connecting them with walkways.

    Cover It

    • Covering a floating deck allows you to use the space even when the sun is very strong or there is a light rain. Choose from several cover options depending on how decorative a look you would like. Prefabricated tents are available that are easy to put together and set up on a deck. However, they can have a disposable look, which may mar the elegant landscape that you are trying to create. Adding a gazebo to an area of your floating deck creates a striking look for your yard and provides an ideal spot for getting out of the sun. You may also opt to cover the entire deck with a pergola and grow attractive vines across the beams to create an enclosed feeling for the space.

    Add a Hot Tub

    • One of the benefits of a floating deck is that you can separate it from the hustle and bustle of your house for peace and quiet and privacy. If you have a hot tub, a floating deck is an ideal location for it because the distance from the house allows you and guests to enjoy the soothing qualities of the tub even as your children are playing in the house. For added privacy, enclose portions of the deck with a lattice screen so you can have private time in the hot tub whenever you like.

    Surround With a Water Feature

    • Another way to make your floating deck a peaceful retreat is to surround it with a water feature. Build your deck so it overlooks a calming reflecting pool, and you'll have an ideal spot for meditating, practicing Yoga or simply unwinding at the end of a long day. You may also opt to have a koi pond put in beside the deck and add landscaping stones and bamboo plants to create an Asian-inspired area for your yard. For a more dramatic look, add a stone waterfall beside your floating deck. Enjoy the soothing sounds of running water as you dine, read or soak up the sun.
