Examine the patio for signs of damage. Missing sections, flaking concrete or cracks all require repair before you can raise the surface. Remove any loose concrete pieces, and cut away any large flakes held on by a sliver of concrete using the hammer and chisel to cut through the base of the flake. Clear out any cracks with a wire brush, and then sweep the entire surface clear of dirt or debris.
Clean the concrete with a power washer, aiming the flow of water away from any structures. Wait about four hours for the concrete to dry after washing.
Line the bases of any adjacent structures with duct tape rising to the new concrete level desired. Create a concrete form using 1-by-4-inch boards and stakes. Place the lumber against the perimeter of the patio, then hammer a wooden stake in behind it. Screw the stake to the form to hold the form in place. Make certain you surround the patio completely with the form, attaching the edges to the structure if necessary to complete the perimeter surround.
Use a low-nap roller to cover the entire patio surface with an acrylic bonding agent to aid in holding the new overlay and old concrete together as the ground shifts below.
Stir the concrete patch mix with a wooden stir stick, or if mixing is necessary, pour the mix and any needed water into a large bucket and combine until you obtain a mix that's the consistency of a thick paste. Pour the mix into the damaged areas, filling them to the surface of the surrounding patio. Use a putty knife to push the mix into place if needed. Use a steel trowel to level the patch mix out with the surrounding surface. Wait about 30 minutes after application for the patch to cure slightly before laying the overlay.
Mix the concrete overlay in a large bucket. Use an electric drill with a paddle attached. You can add tint during the mixing process if desired. Cover the patio with the overlay, pouring as much as 2 inches of the mix. Spread it evenly with a squeegee and allow it to dry for the manufacturer's suggested curing time. It will level itself as it dries, creating a smooth level surface as strong as the original patio.
Remove the forms from the sides of the patio.
