DIY Stone Epoxy Overlay

Stone epoxy overlay can be used to create unique stone coverings over concrete and other surfaces. If you have ever seen a driveway or pool area that had the look of smooth stone but the hardness and permeability of concrete, this was made with a stone epoxy overlay. To create stone epoxy overlay effects at home, you will need the epoxy kit, and some small stones. The epoxy kit will include one jar of resin and one jar of cure. Which stones you use is up to you, but the stones should be clean and free of dust to ensure that they stick properly to the surface.

      Calculate how much stone and epoxy you will need. Measure the dimensions of the area that you wish to cover. Multiply the length times the width do come up with a total surface area in inches. Multiply the result by .5 if you are covering a pool or deck area, as these should generally be 1/2-inch thick. Multiply the result by .75 if you are covering a driveway. The total will be amount of cubic inches that you need to cover. Ask your epoxy supplier how much epoxy you will need to buy. You will need about 100 lb. of stone per gallon of epoxy resin.

      Clean the surface area that you will be applying the stone epoxy to and allow it to dry completely.

      Put on the rubber gloves, safety glasses and long-sleeved shirt.

      Open the resin and the cure containers. Mix each container separately, with different stirrers.

      Pour the resin and the cure into a clean bucket. Mix the two together with a paint stirrer.

      Pour the stone and the epoxy into the concrete mixer, turn it on for around three minutes, or until you can see that every stone is covered with epoxy.

      Pour the stone and epoxy mixture out onto the surface to be covered.

      Spread the stone with a rake so that the entire area is covered relatively equally. Go over the surface with the trowel to flatten out the stone.

      Clean all equipment with soap and water immediately.
