How to Make a Brick Layout

Bricks have been used as a staple construction component throughout the world for thousands of years. Easily created from mixing mud and other ingredients, the bricks are then fired to become durable building blocks for a variety of projects. Laying out bricks in your backyard to create a simple flat surface, from pathways to patios, is simple to do. Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area where you desire the brick layout. Write down the dimensions on a piece of paper. Create a rectangular pattern if you are a beginner at laying bricks, as they are easier than curving bricks.

    • 2

Determine how you desire the bricks to be patterned, using a reference photo, including different sizes if desired.

    • 3

Mark out the area where you desire the bricks. Hammer in stakes around the area to keep track of it.

    • 4

Shovel out the area, 8 inches deep. Examine the entire area with the level to see if the ground is even.

    • 5

Lay 3 inches of gravel. Tamp it down firmly with the compacting machine. Apply another 3 inches of gravel and tamp it down again.

    • 6

Apply an even 1 inch layer of sand, tamping it down with the compacting machine. Place the bricks, using the pre-designed pattern, over the gravel base, cutting bricks to size, if necessary.

    • 7

Spread an even amount of sand over the top of the bricks. Tamp down the sand in between the bricks using the machine. Brush off any excess sand using the broom.
