How to Frame Lattice to Go on Top of an Existing Fence

If you have an existing wood fence and you would like to add a bit of extra height to the top of the fence, you can build and install framed lattice and attach it to the horizontal framing of the existing fence. You can find everything you need to build framed lattice at your local hardware store. Framed lattice will add a decorative touch to your existing fence while providing a moderate amount of privacy.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Pressure treated C-cap molding
  • Miter saw
  • Lattice
  • Table saw
  • Hand drill
  • 1/16-inch drill bit
  • 1/8-inch wood screws
  • Screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width between vertical fence posts with a tape measure and then decide how high you want the additional lattice. These are your dimensions for the lattice panels. For example, if you have an existing 5-foot tall fence with 6-foot spacing between vertical posts, you can build 3-by-6 lattice panels to make your fence 8-feet tall. Check local building codes for limitations on fence height to ensure you comply with all local laws.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of pressure treated C-channel cap molding to match the length and the height for your framing. Cut each end at a 45-degree angle with a miter saw so you can create a piece of square or rectangle framing.

    • 3

Cut a piece of pressure treated lattice 1-inch small in length and height than your measurements in Step 1. This will ensure the lattice fits inside the C-channel of the cap molding. A table saw is the best tool for cutting lattice but you can use a circular saw or even a band saw if necessary.

    • 4

Place the C-channel cap molding on the edges of the lattice. If you cut everything correctly, the 45-degree angles on each end of the cap molding will butt together and create a square 90-degree angle in each corner.

    • 5

Drill two evenly spaced 1/16-inch diameter holes through each corner of the C-cap molding and then drive 1/8-inch diameter wood screws to secure the molding together.

    • 6

Place the lattice panel between the vertical supports on the existing fence and rest it on the horizontal framing.

    • 7

Drill four evenly spaced 1/16-inch diameter holes through the C-cap moldings that butt up with the horizontal framing and then secure the lattice panel to the horizontal framing with 1/8-inch wood screws.
