How to Secure Footings for a Wood Deck on a Concrete Slab

An important part of building a deck is making sure it's structurally sound and stays that way, even as the deck ages. Preserve the structural integrity of the deck by protecting the beams, and posts that support them, against rot. You can install a steel anchor system into wet concrete and attach the wooden posts to them after the concrete dries.

Things You'll Need

  • Anchor bolts
  • Galvanized steel post bases
  • Washers
  • Nuts
  • Drill
  • Wooden posts
  • Galvanized screws

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the anchor bolts halfway into the concrete where you are installing the posts. The anchor bolts are called "J" or "L" bolts because they are bent at 90-degree angles at one end to anchor them in the concrete. Place the angled end into the concrete.

    • 2

Place the galvanized steel post base into the concrete, sliding the hole in the post base over the anchor bolt. Allow the concrete to cure overnight.

    • 3

Slide a washer over the anchor bolt and secure the post base into position with a nut.

    • 4

Drill a hole in the bottom center of the post that will fit over the anchor bolt.

    • 5

Slide the post onto the post base, with the anchor bolt inside the hole at the bottom of the post. Screw the post to the post base with galvanized screws.
