• An arbor structure over your deck is an ideal option if you wish to provide partial shade. Construct it out of the same materials used to build your deck or match the trim work of your home for a more a seamless look. An added benefit of an arbor is that you can gain additional coverage during hot-weather months by growing vines over the top or by adding removable panels made of materials such as fabric, wood or woven reed.

Awning

• For a versatile overhead deck cover, opt for a retractable awning. These structures have a metal framework permanently mounted to the side of your home and covered with a weather-resistant shade fabric that commonly lasts for at least 10 years. The awnings are made to quickly open and retract via a hand crank or motorized system to provide shade, rain protection or welcomed sun, when needed. An added benefit of this type of structure is you do not have to remove any part of it during harsh weather. Simply retract it to store and protect it until the weather improves. • For a sturdy and permanent structure, opt for a solid overhead cover, framed and constructed with materials similar to those used to build the home. Incorporate an angle to the roof so that it easily sheds rain and snow away from the deck. Install a ceiling fan to increase air floor and cooling beneath the structure. You can safely leave furnishings out year-round with minimal concern for weather damage and comfortably cook outdoors year-round.

• A fabric canopy is one of the least expensive ways to create a cover over your deck. Many styles of freestanding, portable canopies are available from home improvement or department stores, and most are designed with a metal frame and weather-resistant fabric cover. The cover is easy to remove and store away during harsh weather months while the frame can be left intact year around. For a less obtrusive canopy, opt for a style with a rigid frame that is intended to be bolted to two sides of your deck. It doesn't take up much deck space and also supports a removable fabric cover.
