How to Make a Backyard Patio to Block Wind

A backyard patio provides a pleasant place to enjoy fresh air. When weather becomes windy, however, spending time on a patio is less enjoyable and more of a nuisance. With the addition of windbreaks, a patio can provide shelter from the breeze, allowing you to enjoy the weather in your back yard without being in the middle of a gale. Additional benefits of windbreaks are added privacy, reduced energy consumption and the creation of comfortable micro-climates.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the prevailing wind direction at your site. It depends on regional wind patterns, local topography and wind obstructions such as buildings and trees. Climate descriptions of your location will give you a good idea of the prevailing wind direction.

    • 2

Draw a sketch of your yard, including your house, patio and obstructions such as trees and outbuildings. Draw arrows to indicate the prevailing wind direction.

    • 3

Decide which kind of windbreak is best suited for your back yard. Trees work well but require a fair amount of space and time to grow. A fence or hedge may work better for limited space,

    • 4

Add your chosen windbreak to your drawing, placing the windbreak between your patio and the prevailing wind.

    • 5

Install the windbreak. This task may involve hiring a contractor to build a fence or planting trees yourself.
