How to Restore a Deck's Beauty

Wood decks add value and outdoor living space to a home. Unfortunately, decks become worn and damaged over time. Broken boards, splinters, loose nails and other issues pose hazards. A neglected or old deck also detracts from your home and landscape. Instead of removing a structurally sound deck, restore it to like-new condition with some time and skill to preserve the investment, looks, comfort and value of your deck.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your local weather forecast. Schedule the refinishing work for a period when no rain is forecast for at least three days.

    • 2

Remove any furniture, grills, planters or other items on the deck. Sweep off dirt, leaves and debris. Clean out anything stuck between boards.

    • 3

Wash the deck. Use a deck brush with a long handle to scrub the surfaces with detergent and hot water. If you see signs of mold or mildew, mix 1 qt. of bleach with 3 qts of water and scrub the deck surfaces. Rinse with a hose and sprayer.

    • 4

Remove iron stains caused by nails. The Iowa State University Extension recommends mixing 1 lb. oxalic acid into 1 gallon hot water. Apply to the stains, let stand for up to 5 minutes and rinse.

    • 5

Check the deck for damage. Look for cracked boards, protruding nails, broken rail pieces and loose pieces. Remove and replace damaged boards and rails, hammer in protruding nails and tighten any loose pieces.

    • 6

Sand rough areas using 100-grit sandpaper. Use a belt sander on the deck boards. Hand sand rails and spindles if needed. Always sand with the grain of the wood.

    • 7

Rinse the sanding dust off of the deck with a hose. Allow the deck to dry for at least one day.

    • 8

Stain the deck. Use a color that matches your home and landscape. Apply the stain in thin layers until you reach the desired look using rags or a paintbrush, and wipe off excess. Leave the stain to dry following manufacturer's directions.

    • 9

Apply a top coat to seal and weatherproof the wood. This adds a durable, attractive finish that protects the deck. Allow the sealant to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
