Snap straight lines on the face of the concrete deck at the locations where you'll make cuts, using a chalk box. Inspect the area to make sure that no utilities or other obstructions are in the cutting path.
Check the concrete saw's oil and fuel levels. Inspect the saw's safety features, such as the blade guard and motor housing, for any cracks that may weaken or prevent proper usage of the concrete saw. Inspect the cutting blade for any broken teeth, cracks or warps that could cause the saw to malfunction.
Start the saw by following the tool manufacturer's instructions. Rest the front tip of the blade guard against the ground, and align the cutting blade with the snapped chalk line. Squeeze the concrete saw's trigger. Bring the blade to its full rotation speed, and gently ease it into the concrete surface.
Slide the saw back and forth gently while making the initial cut to prevent the blade from binding as it sinks deeper into the concrete. Stop the cutting blade's downward motion when material other than concrete dust comes up from the cut; this means you have fully penetrated the concrete deck and have reached the material under the deck.
Slide the saw in a forward motion slowly to cut along the snapped chalk line. Allow the concrete saw blade to cut only to the depth of the concrete deck, avoiding the material underneath to prolong the blade's life.
Take breaks from cutting as needed by pulling out the rotating saw blade and then releasing the power trigger. Wait until the blade stops moving before setting the saw on the ground. Clean off the chalk line if it gets covered with debris.
