Deck Lattice Horizontal Vs. Crisscross

An elevated deck with support posts has a space beneath it. This open area can fill up with leaves and dirt, and it can become a home to animals. Installing a deck skirt made from lattice, or strips of wood, is your means of preventing access to the area and providing a decorative element to that portion of your home. Lattice can come in a variety of patterns; horizontal and crisscross lattice both work well for deck skirting applications, each with its own advantages.
  1. Function

    • The purpose of deck lattice is to provide a barrier for the area underneath the deck. It needs to keep out unwanted materials and animals while allowing air to enter for circulation purposes. Both crisscross and horizontal lattice provide that protection. The degree of protection depends upon the arrangement of the lattice strips. Crisscross lattice in diamond shapes keeps out all but the smallest animals and debris. Coverage by horizontal strips depends upon how close together the strips are located.

    Ease of Installation

    • Crisscross or diamond pattern lattice panels come precut and ready to install. Lattice panels with square rather than diamond patterns are also available. If you want a special design you may have to make your own, which may require additional installation time. Whichever type of lattice you select, you will need to build a framework that attaches to the posts. This framework provides the basis for the lattice. Because the ground under your deck will probably not be perfectly flat, you will need to measure the distance from the deck to the ground at multiple points, then cut or create lattice to fit the space.

    Appearance

    • You'll find most of your average home improvement store lattice to be crisscross. The strips cross and form diamond shapes, and they are considered to have a great appearance. Horizontal lattice does not have that same appeal. Your choice depends upon the location of your deck and the visibility of your deck skirt. If it is likely to be seen by the public, crisscross lattice may be your best choice. If it is mostly out of view, horizontal lattice may be preferable, because it provides better coverage.

    Variety

    • Crisscross deck lattice comes in one standard design: the diamond shape. You could create your own crisscross by purchasing strips of wood and making different arrangements. However, it is difficult to come up with a custom crisscross that beats the standard form. Horizontal patterns usually mean you'll design your own. That allows for some variety with a personal touch.
