Do-It-Yourself Retrofit Wrought Iron Railing

The use of wrought iron in fencing and railing was common before steel was developed in the mid-19th century. If you need to install a new porch railing on your home, wrought iron is a material you can use, especially if your home is made of brick or stone, as the wrought iron works well aesthetically with masonry. Installing a wrought iron railing is a fairly easy project for a homeowner to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the railing into position where you are installing it. Get someone to help you if you're having trouble moving the railing. Position the railing so that it is evenly spaced from the edge of the surface where it's being installed.

    • 2

Mark the location of the screw holes in the base of the railing onto the concrete and remove the railing.

    • 3

Drill pilot holes into the concrete at the marks. Use a hammer drill with a masonry drill bit.

    • 4

Unscrew the bolts from the concrete sleeve anchors and place the sleeve anchors into the pilot holes. Tap the top of the sleeve anchors down gently with a hammer if needed to get the top of the sleeve anchors flush with the top of the concrete.

    • 5

Move the railing back into position, lining up the holes in the base of the railing over the pilot holes in the concrete.

    • 6

Screw the bolts into the sleeve anchors with a socket wrench, but don't overtighten the bolts because you could break the sleeve anchors.

    • 7

Cover the heads of the bolts with paint so they match the color of the railing.
