Can I Use Olympic Deck Brightener on All Wood Decks?

Originally created to remove red tannin stains on cedar and redwood, according to the manufacturer, Olympic Deck Brightener has multiple applications and uses. Olympic Paint is owned by PPG, a global leader in the manufacturer of coatings, specialty products and construction materials, with facilities in 60 countries. Olympic Deck Brightener is made from a chemical known as ethanedioic acid, hydrate, with a chemical composition the same as oxalic acid, dihydrate, according to the government’s National Institute of Standards and Technology.
  1. Where To Use

    • Use Olympic Deck Brightener on decks, fences, outdoor furniture and children’s play equipment made from wood or composite surfaces. The product is biodegradable and doesn’t contain any bleach. With light scrubbing, it works in 30 minutes. While it will work on wood composites, it might not have an effect on all wood types, as it was designed specifically for soft wood conifers such as cedar and redwood subject to "red" tannin staining.

    Full Strength Uses

    • Used full strength, Olympic Deck Brightener removes red clay stains on vinyl and aluminum siding, on plastic-coated furniture and decks, and on concrete driveways or patios. A gallon covers an area of approximately 200 square feet depending on the condition of the surface being treated.

    Protections

    • When using Olympic Deck Brightener around vegetation, spray landscaping with water before use, and cover sensitive vegetation to prevent leaf burning. While it's biodegradable, when applied directly to plants, it may burn or injure the plants. With time, it dissipates from the environment naturally. Wash down the area and surrounding vegetation after use. With all chemicals, biodegradable or not, protect yourself as well when using the product. Keep it out of your eyes, and wear gloves and a face mask if you have allergies or skin sensitivities.

    Testing

    • As with all products you have not used before, it’s a good idea to test Olympic Deck Brightener on a hidden area of the item you wish to clean first. Use a brush, mop, roller or garden sprayer to apply. Use a natural-bristle brush or broom to scrub the surface; don’t use with metal brushes or bristles. Let it sit for 30 minutes after application and brushing. When done, rinse the area thoroughly, and wash down the area around the application as well. Allow the treated item to dry fully for one to three days before applying any other products.
