How to Calculate How Many Bags of Rock for Pavers

Pavers are a useful outdoor building material. They can be effectively used for walkways, patios or other outdoor landscaping. Pavers are usually installed on a base of rock. The rock allows for drainage underneath the pavers and provides a firm foundation. When planning a paver project, it's important to know how much of the different types of materials you'll need to complete your project. Determining how many bags of rock you'll need requires a little measurement and a little math.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area you'll be covering with pavers. If the area is a simple square or rectangle, multiply the width in feet by the length in feet. If the area is more irregular in shape, break it up into separate squares or rectangles, determine their areas and add them together.

    • 2

Multiply the figure from the first step with the depth, in feet, of the rock you'll be adding. This figure will probably be less than a foot, so divide the measurement in inches by 12 to get the figure. For example, 6 inches divided by 12 equals 0.5 feet. The final figure you come up with is the cubic feet of rock necessary.

    • 3

Divide this figure by the cubic feet of rock in one bag to get the total number of bags necessary. For example, if you've determined you'll need 15 cubic feet of rock, and each bag holds 0.75 cubic feet of rock, you'll need 20 bags of rock for your project.
