Alternatives to Lattice for Deck Skirting

The typical lattice deck skirting does the job, but the crossing wood slats don't fit everyone's style. Alternative deck skirting materials give you more options for hiding the area underneath the deck while getting the look you want. Your budget, preferred style and skill level will all help determine which deck skirting option is best for your project.
  1. Planks

    • Wood planks or leftover decking give you an option to hide the area underneath the deck. Using the same wood used on the rest of the deck creates a cohesive look. To attach the boards vertically, you'll need to add a board along the ground that you are able to nail the bottoms of the boards to. Stain or paint the wood plank deck skirting so that it matches the rest of the deck and landscape.

    Plywood

    • Sheets of plywood offer a skirting material option for your deck. Choose exterior plywood so the skirting holds up better to the weather conditions that often lead to rotting. For stability, add a board along the bottom of the deck posts near the ground. This allows you to screw the bottom of the plywood to the board to brace it. Painting the plywood gives it a decorative appearance. Landscaping in front of the plywood also dresses it up.

    Fencing

    • Sections of fencing give you a ready-made grate to place underneath the deck. Choose a fencing material that is easy to cut, such as wood, as you will likely need to cut down the fencing to make it fit into the space. Wood is also easier to install because you are able to screw it to the deck framing. Another option is to use sections of bamboo fencing. This gives the deck skirting a distinct natural look.

    Shrubs

    • Grate-style skirting that attaches to the deck itself keeps out animals, while disguising the area. If you don't have concerns about animals getting under the deck, shrubbery is a natural way to hide the area under your deck. Dense shrubbery effectively blocks the view under your deck while adding color and texture to the landscaping. Keep the shrubs trimmed so they don't grow up over the deck or look unkempt.
