Utilize the trellis inside the pergola as a support for twining vegetables. Types of beans, cucumbers and even melons can grow on a trellis. For heavy fruits and vegetables the trellis is best constructed from materials that are strong enough to support the heavy load, such as substantial wood, wire or metal materials.
Plant vines to climb on the trellis for a decorative display. Annual flowering vines can add a decorative flair to the pergola wall while providing shade for plants growing inside the pergola. This enables the gardener to grow shade loving plants, such as astilbe and bleeding heart, in the appropriate conditions inside of the pergola.
Display hanging baskets against the trellis wall, filled with cascading foliage. Couple these with ground-planted specimens in coordinating colors.
Match flowers on the trellis to those in baskets hanging from the top of the pergola. Nasturtiums in climbing forms coordinate with pansies and impatiens.
Use the trellis as a support for grapes and other fruiting vines. Keep tomatoes off the ground by growing on a trellis. Determinate cherry tomatoes are attractive on a small trellis when planted in colors of red and yellow.
