Cool Deck Overlay on an Existing Patio

Patio decks frequently lose their luster over the years from heavy usage and the effects of rain, snow and sun. If the patio deck is made of concrete, you have more options than if the patio is made from wood, which has to be removed before new overlays can be installed. There are several trendy patio overlay options available.
  1. Sprayed-On Overlays

    • One of the easiest deck overlays uses stencils to create patterns on concrete. The entire surface of the concrete is sprayed or hand-coated with a light background color. After that dries, the stencils are arranged in decorative patterns and painted in complementary colors. Textured, weatherproof paint gives the deck a finish that resists slips and skids.

    Microtoppings

    • Also called skim coats, you can spray these on for a colorful, silky finish, use a trowel to create designs and patterns, or impart textures in the finish with sand or tiny pebbles. Microtoppings are made from super-thin, flexible polymers that wear well. They come in a wide range of colors that can be mixed to match surrounding décor such as house siding, outdoor furniture or pools.

    Stamped Concrete

    • This overlay is particularly good for covering concrete that is pitted from wear, as it is 1/4 to 3/4 inch thick. The concrete is mixed with liquid or powdered stains and dyes, then sealers are added to increase the longevity of the concrete. It can be textured and stamped to look like natural stone, brick or slate.

    Stone and Brick Overlays

    • Stone and brick can be applied only to concrete patios that have no attached doors, gates or other structures that the added thickness of the overlay would impede. They can be installed in conventional or nontraditional patterns, and both stone and brick can be incorporated into the design. Stone veneers look like real stone, but they add less thickness to the existing patio than authentic stone.

    Tile Coverings

    • Vinyl and ceramic tiles in bright colors and unique patterns are fashionable overlays for patios. Many types of tile are formulated to withstand the rigors of the outdoors, and they are easy to clean and maintain. Be sure to apply a weatherproof sealant under the tiles, and use a top sealant to ensure that there's good adhesion to the substrate and to prevent seepage of water from rain and snow.

    Tips and Hints

    • Consider the color and style of your overlay carefully before beginning installation. While a bold design may look good on a 12-inch-square tile, it may overpower the area when multiplied by 100. If you are not familiar with working with paint, tile or other overlay materials, hiring a professional may be a time- and cost-effective option.
