How to Make a Concrete Porch Entry More Inviting

Creating an inviting front entryway can give your house curb appeal and welcome guests. If you have a concrete porch entry, the drab look of the concrete can sometimes give the space a cold, unattractive look. You can give your porch entry a warmer, cozier feel by making one or two small changes.
  1. Add an Overlay

    • If your porch entry features cheerless, gray concrete, a decorative concrete overlay may be the easiest way to make it more inviting. As its name implies, a concrete overlay is placed over existing concrete to spruce up its appearance. With an overlay, you have a range of design options. A stamped overlay is pressed with a pattern to make it resemble brick, cobblestone, slate, tile or other natural materials that can give your entryway a cozy, welcoming feel. To give the area added warmth, have your stamped overlay stained as well. A warm brown or terracotta stain can instantly give your entryway a more inviting look than a plain gray concrete slab would.

    Roll Out a Carpet

    • While a concrete overlay is less costly than real brick or stone for your entryway, it may not fit all budgets. If you are in the market for a budget-friendly way to dress up your plain concrete porch entry, an outdoor carpet is an ideal option. Outdoor carpets are available in varied colors and patterns, so you can find a design that complements your home’s exterior. To create an inviting entryway, choose a carpet with warm colors such as red, rust or sage green. A floral pattern can add flair to the space as well, so guests are treated to a more interesting look as they enter your home.

    Add an Overhang

    • A concrete porch entry can feel more inviting if you create a cozy, enclosed area in the space. Adding some type of overhang is usually the easiest way to enclose the area. If you are on a budget, a simple awning, available in fabric and metal options, is an ideal option. If you want a more formal or dramatic look, add a gabled portico. A portico provides the most decorative look and typically covers a larger area than an awning, so residents and guests are protected from inclement weather.

    Put Out Flowers

    • You can create a cozier look for your concrete porch entry by adding flowers to the area. If your entryway is made of gray concrete, add large urns of colorful flowers on either side of your door to give the area a brighter look. For a stained concrete entryway, simple green plants in a colored urn that complements your home’s exterior instantly make the area more inviting.
