How to Make Front Porch Steps for a Mobile Home

Building steps for the front porch on a mobile home requires basic skills using woodworking tools. When you build steps, they must follow building codes that are intended to keep people safe when using the stairs. The average do-it-yourselfer can complete the project in a couple of hours, depending on the number of steps the stringer must accommodate.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the top of the landing to the ground. This determines the number of steps you need. Divide the measurement by seven, then round to the nearest whole number. For example, if the measurement is 28 inches, you need four steps. To determine the rise of each step, divide the 28 inches by the number of steps to determine that the height between each step must 7 inches.

    • 2

Place the 2-by-12-by-8 board on the sawhorses. Starting from the end of the board, measure a length at 28 inches and mark the measurement with a pencil. Cut the board from the main section using a circular saw. Repeat the process twice more until you have three 2-by-12 boards 28 inches long.

    • 3

Place one of the cut boards on the sawhorses and draw the lines for the step cutouts using a framing square and a pencil. The step itself is 10 inches, while the rise is 7 inches. When you are through, you have a zigzag line on the board. Cut the stringer out of the board using a circular saw. Repeat the process for the remaining two stringers.

    • 4

Cut 1 1/2 inches from the bottom of each stringer using a circular saw so the stringers will set flat on the ground. Attach the stringers to the landing using a drill, screwdriver bit and decking screws. Space each stringer 16 inches from center from the last stringer. Place a level across the stair stringers to be sure everything is level.

    • 5

Place the 2-by-6-by-12 boards on the sawhorses. Measure from the end of the board down 36 inches and mark the measurement with a pencil. Cut the board using the circular saw. Repeat the process until you have a total of eight 2-by-6 boards, 36 inches long. These are the steps for the stairs. Attach them to the stringers using a drill, screwdriver bit and decking screws. Place two screws into the steps at each stringer. When you place the second board on the riser, leave a gap of 1/8 inch from the first board. Note that the second board of a step overhangs on each rise.
