How to Make a Patio for a BBQ Pit

An outdoor barbecue pit requires a level and solid patio for safety. A stone patio provides a solid base for a barbecue pit, and is also an attractive addition to the landscape. The patio is easy to customize to suit your needs and the size of your barbecue pit. This do-it-yourself project does not require any previous patio building skills, although the help of an assistant will make the job go quicker. Add some patio furniture and potted plants to the patio for a relaxing outdoor space.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a level location to install the patio for the barbecue. The area should be away from large trees to avoid damage from tree roots. Use a measuring tape to measure out a square or rectangle the desired size of the patio. Use spray paint to outline the shape of the patio.

    • 2

Use a flat-bladed shovel to dig out inside the spray-painted line to 5 inches below ground level. Level the ground with a hand tamp.

    • 3

Shovel a 3-inch layer of gravel into the dug-out area. Use the back of the shovel to spread the gravel evenly. Tamp the gravel down in place. The gravel will prevent water from pooling under the patio.

    • 4

Shovel sand on top of the gravel. Spread the sand with the back of the shovel until there is a 1-inch layer of sand evenly across the gravel. Water lightly with a hose.Tamp the sand down. Add another 1-inch layer of sand and tamp down.

    • 5

Place a patio stone in one corner of the patio area. Gently tap the stone into the sand with a rubber mallet. Place a second stone next to the first as close as possible and tap into place. Repeat to install all of the stones.

Shovel a one-half-inch layer of sand on top of the patio. Use a push broom to sweep the sand into the cracks between the stones. This will prevent the stones from shifting. The patio is now ready for a barbecue.
