How to Redo the Patio

Patios are a relaxing place for you and your family to spend time together. Yet time and the weather can make patios look unattractive. You can redo your patio to give it new life and a decorative touch based on the type of surface you have, either wood or concrete. For wood patios, you can sand off the old surface to reveal newer wood. If you have a concrete patio, you can add a decorative pattern with bricks or pavers on top.

Instructions

  1. Wood Patio

    • 1

Clean the wood by pouring oxygen bleach into a bucket of water following the manufacturer's instructions for the type of oxygen bleach you are using. Soak the solution in the sponge and clean the wood boards.

    • 2

Allow the patio to dry. Counter-sink the nails on the patio by holding a nail on top of the nail head in the wood board. Pound the nail against the nail head with a hammer until the nail head is deeper in the board.

    • 3

Sand the surface of the patio with a power sander. You can rent one from your local home-improvement store. Sand the entire patio with coarse sandpaper and then with a finer sandpaper.

    • 4

Apply epoxy resin sealer on the boards. Allow the boards to dry before placing furniture on the patio.

    Concrete Patio

    • 5

Add decorative bricks to concrete patios. Clean the concrete with a wire brush and concrete cleaner.

    • 6

Trowel mortar onto the concrete in a small area until 1/2-inch thick. Butter the back of the brick by scraping mortar on the surface.

    • 7

Lay the brick firmly into the mortar on the concrete. Place the second brick next to the first leaving a 3/8-inch space. Finish placing the brick pattern over the entire patio.

    • 8

Fill in the seams with mortar. Wipe up the excess with a wet sponge. Allow the mortar to dry.
