How to Attach a Deck Roof

Decks are a place to relax in hot and sunny weather. When there is rain on the way or the sun is too hot for comfort, having a deck roof is an advantage. Attaching a deck roof extends the amount of time a deck is enjoyed by providing shelter needed without interfering with your deck use.

Instructions

Decide the height the roof should stand above the deck, and add the height of the deck from the ground to this measurement. Add another foot for the required length. Cut four pieces of 2-by-4-inch lumber to the required length using the circular saw. Dig a hole 1 foot deep and 1 foot wide at each corner of the deck, using the shovel. Plant one of the 2-by-4-inch posts in each hole.

Mix concrete from 3 parts sand, 1 part cement and a small amount of water. Fill each hole with concrete holding the post in place. Allow the concrete time to set. While the concrete is setting, measure the length and width of your deck. Cut two pieces of 2-by-4-inch lumber to the length of the deck and two other pieces to the deck’s width of the deck using a circular saw.

Cut notches in the ends of each piece so that the pieces interlock with one-another for extra support. Fasten the pieces together to form a rectangular frame with lag bolts. Nail plywood sheets to the frame’s top using a hammer and one-half inch galvanized nails forming the roof.

Decide if the roof should be angled or be flat on top of the posts. If the roof is angled, cut 2 inches off the top of the front two posts. Raise the roof up to the top of the posts. Fasten the roof in place using lag bolts.
