How to Measure Deck Footings

Properly measured and installed deck footings are essential for a stable deck. The footings are dug down into the ground and formed with concrete as the base for the deck posts. You'll need to measure both the distance between the footings and the depth of the footings during the construction process. The size of the deck and layout of the posts affects the measurements and placement of the footings. Plan out and measure the locations accurately before you begin pouring to prevent problems.

Review the specifications laid out in the local building codes for decks. Determine the requirements for spacing between the footings as well as the depth of the footings. The footings should be below the frost line in your area, which is considered in the building codes.

    • 2

Draw out a plan for the deck including the dimensions of the deck and the locations of the footings. The specific locations depend on the design and size of the deck but are typically no more than 8 feet apart. Additional footings are necessary for decks with heavy loads like a hot tub.

    • 3

Mark out the area of the deck on the ground. Use wood stakes to mark out the corners of the deck. Tie strings between the stakes to get a straight line marking the perimeter of the deck so you are able to mark the footings properly.

    • 4

Measure along each length of the deck perimeter. Mark out the footings along the edges based on the measurements determined in your deck plan. Check the measurements to ensure the spacing between the footings is equal.

    • 5

Dig the footings based on the marked locations. Measure down into the hole with a tape measure to ensure you dig deeper than the frost level plus an extra 6 inches to allow for drainage gravel. Measure the width of the hole to ensure it is wide enough to accommodate the form, which is most often a 12-inch tube. Allow for extra space around the tube.
