How to Lay a Floating Deck

This plan is easy and quick to put together, making it a good choice for the novice woodworker. Easy to build on a larger or smaller scale, this plan is flexible enough to suit various yard sizes. Instructions

    • 1

Use a jigsaw to cut four lengths of 2-by-2-inch lumber to measure 20 inches long. Cut three lengths of 1-by-6-inch lumber measuring 20 inches long. Place all pieces in a vise while cutting for best results.

    • 2

Wrap a piece of medium-grit sandpaper around a cork block. Use the paper to sand the ends and rough spots of the lumber cut in the previous step.

    • 3

Apply an even coat of wood stain or paint to the surface of all seven lumber pieces. Let the paint or stain to dry completely.

    • 4

Arrange the four 2-by-2-inch boards of lumber on a flat surface to form a 20-inch square. Screw the square together using one 3-inch wood screw at each corner. Place the three 1-by-6-inch boards across the top of the square. Arrange the 1-by-6-inch boards evenly spaced across the square. Screw them in place using two 2-inch wood screws on each board. This is one piece for the floating deck. Repeat to make 24 more 20-inch pieces.

    • 5

Select a level location to install the deck. The area should also have excellent drainage. Measure the area to be sure it is large enough for the deck. The finished deck measures about 8 by 8 feet.

    • 6

Arrange five of the deck squares in a straight line. This is one row for the deck. Arrange the remaining boards next to the first row to make four more rows. Leave no spaces between the pieces.
