How to Install Vinyl Lattice Panels Under a Deck

Lattice work hides the ugly, bare spots under a raised deck and prevents animals from making the area their new home. However, making your own lattice work is a time-consuming and expensive process. The best way to create barriers is to buy premade lattice panels. All you need to finish this home project are accurate measurements and a few construction tools. Vinyl lattice is a good choice because it holds up well under extreme temperatures and cleans easily with a power washer. Think ahead and attach at least one hinged panel to accommodate the repairman later.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area from the bottom of the deck to the ground. Write down this measurement. Measure from side to side, figuring what the length of lattice you'll need. Write down this measurement. Go to the home improvement store to select lattice according to the dimensions you have recorded.

    • 2

Predrill the holes in the molding of the lattice work using a power drill. Poke holes with the drill every 24 inches.

    • 3

Starting at one end, line the lattice panels along the deck to verify that all panels will fit. Rearrange them as necessary.

    • 4

Secure the panels in place starting at the left end of the deck. Position the panel leaving a 1 inch of space on the deck post. Screw the panel into place, drilling into the wooden post. Drill at the top and bottom of the panel.

    • 5

Screw along the molding of the panel, following the drill holes you've created. Add another panel to the deck space, leaving a 1-inch gap on the deck post. The gap will allow the lattice to expand during warm and cold temperatures. Continue until all the deck space is covered except the last piece.

Drill holes for the hinge mounts at the top of the lattice panels. Attach the mounts to lattice panels. Lift the panel with one hand and screw the panel to the deck with the other. Screw the panel on its left and right sides.
