How to Fiberglass a Wooden Deck

Harsh winters, wet springs and humid summers can do a number on a wooden deck. While a well-constructed wood deck will last for decades in all kinds of weather, a well-constructed plywood deck with a protective fiberglass coating has added protection from moisture and UV rays, leaving it virtually maintenance-free and easy to clean. The process involves laying a thin fiberglass mat sealed with epoxy over the plywood and takes about an afternoon, plus drying time, for an average-sized deck.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the deck with a pressure washer. Allow it to dry completely.

    • 2

Fill any knots, holes or gaps between plywood sheets with wood putty, scraping it flat with a putty knife. Allow the putty to dry overnight, or as directed by the manufacturer.

    • 3

Put on work gloves and safety glasses to protect your skin and eyes from the fiberglass and epoxy.

    • 4

Unroll the fiberglass mat over the plywood deck. Cut the mat to size in rows using a utility knife, allowing the outer edges to hang over the sides by about 2 inches. Leave the first mat in place on the plywood.

    • 5

Mix 1 quart of epoxy resin as directed. You'll likely need more than a quart to cover the deck, but only mix enough for about 15 minutes of work at a time.

    • 6

Roll the epoxy over the fiberglass mat using a medium nap paint roller. Don't let the epoxy pool -- apply a thin, even coat. The fiberglass mat will become translucent. Lay the next mat as you finish the first, allowing the edges to overlap slightly. Repeat until the deck is covered, with the outer edges hanging over the sides.

    • 7

Allow the epoxy to dry for two days, or as directed by the manufacturer. Once the fiberglass coat has cured, apply a gelcoat, colored resin coat or deck paint over it.
