How to Hang Balcony Screens

Many apartment dwellers choose a unit with a balcony because it offers an outdoor seating space and view. Though you may enjoy looking out onto the street below, you probably want to hang a balcony screen so you are not on display yourself. Hanging a balcony screen from your balcony's support posts is relatively simple, though it requires precise measurements. One of the most common screens for balconies is the retractable bamboo screen because it is weather resistant and fits most decors.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and height of the balcony opening you wish to screen. Purchase a bamboo screen that covers the area, including an extra 6 inches for both the length and the height. Most bamboo screens include the corresponding hanging brackets.

    • 2

Use the strings of the bamboo screen to fully let out the screen.

    • 3

Hold up the bamboo balcony screen to your balcony's support posts and mark the desired overlap on either side with a pencil. A privacy screen usually overlaps by a few inches on either side. Mark the top of the screen with a pencil as well. You will use these marks to guide the placement of your bamboo screen.

    • 4

Measure along the length of the bamboo screen's slotted area to find the center of the slot. The slotted area is located on the back side of the top valance. You will hang your screen through the slots so the valance faces out. Measure the center of the slotted area on both sides of the screen.

    • 5

Use the measurements from the center of the slotted areas to mark where to drill the screen brackets. Starting from the marked reference points from step 3, measure and mark the length to the center of the slot areas.

    • 6

Drill holes for the screen brackets with your drill bit. Unscrew the wing nuts from both brackets. Use your Phillips-head screwdriver to screw in the brackets to the ceiling of your balcony.

    • 7

Slip the bamboo screen into the brackets and secure the screen by screwing in the wing nuts.

    • 8

Pull the cords of the screen to ensure the screen rises and lowers properly.
