Check your local building codes to obtain the proper building permits before you begin constructing a porch. You may need to submit your designs to a professional contractor before your local building code enforcer approves your construction design.
Consider the design and structure of the home and decide on a complimentary design. Check out architectural design magazines for design inspiration. Make a sketch of your porch design.
Measure the length of your home where you will build the porch. Decide on the desired width of your porch. Commit the dimensions to paper so you have them on hand when you purchase your building materials.
Outline the dimensions for your porch with stakes and heavy string. This gives you a good visual of the size your porch will be when it’s finished.
Calculate the slope for the roof by measuring the vertical rise at 3 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal length. A roof that measures 36 inches horizontally will need to have a slope or rise of 9 inches. Match the pitch for the porch roof with the roof on your home.
Consider any electrical outlets you may want installed in your porch area such as overhead lighting for a ceiling fan. Consult with an electrical contractor for installation.
Decide on the type of aluminum roofing you intend to cover your porch with, such as aluminum interlocking shingles or aluminum vertical panels.
Compile your materials list. This should include the posts, support boards, roofing materials, type of flooring and tools.
