Cut a piece of fascia the length of the rim joist -- the joist farthest from the side of the house -- plus an additional 1 ¼ inches to create an overlap of 5/8 inch on each side. This overlap will cover the ends of the fascia on the band joists, which run perpendicular to the rim joist.
Apply construction adhesive to the back of the fascia. Press the fascia into place, centered on the rim joist, and have an assistant or a wood clamp hold the fascia against the joist. Secure the fascia with No. 8 screws at each end. Add two No. 8 screws every 16 inches, each at least 1 inch from the sides and ends. Match the color of the screws to that of the fascia.
Cut additional pieces of fascia to cover the band joists that meet the rim joist, to their exact length. Glue and screw in place.
Cut horizontal lengths of fascia to cover the stair stringers, fitting the fascia to the shape of the tread and riser and to the angle of the stringer’s bottom edge. Glue and screw in place.
