How to Make a Sturdy Detachable Deck

Building a detached deck means more than just slapping some boards together. It must have a sturdy foundation with boards strong enough to support the weight of those on top. Pier blocks give you the support you need at a much reduced price over what a contractor will charge for a deck. The example used is a small, 4-by-4-foot deck, which can be extended with more piers and longer wood.

Things You'll Need

  • 6 pier blocks
  • 2-by-6-inch treated lumber or composite rails, 3 pieces at 4-foot lengths
  • 2-by-6-inch treated lumber or composite sides, 2 pieces at 4-foot lengths
  • 1/2-inch plywood sheet, 1 piece at 4-by-4 foot width and length
  • Measuring tape
  • Shovel
  • Carpenter's level
  • 2-pound framing nails
  • Hammer
  • Covering of choice

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the pier blocks out in a rectangle two deep and three wide, with 4 feet between the outer edges of the two deep blocks, and 2 feet between the center marks of the three wide blocks.

    • 2

Place one of the wood rails both length- and width-wise into all the rows and columns to ensure the blocks are properly lined up. Measure the level of the rail while it is across the blocks and adjust the blocks accordingly to level the wood.

    • 3

Frame the deck by placing a rail across each row of two piers. The rails should extend to be even with the outer edges of the piers. Nail a side frame piece to each side, holding the frame together.

    • 4

Place the plywood squarely on the frame and nail it to the frame, both along the edges and along the rails.

    • 5

Paint the deck with the color of your choice, or cover it with options such as outdoor carpet, linoleum or other long-lasting, weather-resistant material. Other options include adding decorative latticework to each side, or pre-finished steps from a hardware or home store.
