How to Anchor a Porch Roof to a Fascia Board

Fascia boards are trim pieces placed at the eaves and gable ends of a roof on a home or a porch. If you are building a roofed porch, you can connect it to the main portion of your house using 8d galvanized finish nails.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of your porch roof where it lines up with the fascia board on your home’s roof. Mark that distance on the frieze board and cut it down to size with the circular saw. Use more than one board if necessary. If you need the boards cut at an angle to follow the shape of the porch roof, cut the angle with a jigsaw.

    • 2

Place the frieze board between your porch roof and the fascia board attached to your home’s roof. Nail the frieze board into the fascia board with the 8d galvanized finish nails. The nails are long enough to penetrate the fascia board and anchor the frieze board to it, without being so long they run the risk of splitting the wood.

    • 3

Nail the porch roof to the frieze board using the hammer and 8d nails. If this portion of the porch roof will be visible, pound the nails in until they are sunk slightly below the surface of the porch roof board. Fill in the indentation with wood putty and allow it to dry. Paint or stain the area on the porch to conceal the placement of the finishing nails.
