How to Install Composite Decking on a Rubber Floor

Proper installation of composite decking creates a lasting outdoor area for years of enjoyment. Composite decking is made of a combination of wood, wood particles and plastics. The amount of actual wood versus plastic in the composite is dependent on the manufacturer. Ideally, the composite is applied over wood framing. In the case of rubber flooring, it is possible to install the decking. It is not the ideal situation, but the project is possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Power wash the rubber flooring and allow to dry. Clean the area with water only to avoid leaving any soap residue on the floor.

    • 2

Rough the rubber area with sandpaper. Slightly rough the area using 220-grit sandpaper. This will help the adhesive stick. Sweep the area thoroughly after sanding to remove any dirt or debris.

    • 3

Apply a heavy-duty polyurethane-based construction adhesive to the composite decking and begin laying. Run a line of the adhesive along the bottom side of the board and place flush to the wall. Be sure to place flush into the corner. Use a rubber mallet to gently pound the board toward the wall. Lay a full row, flush end-to-end along the wall area.

    • 4

At the end of the first row, it may be necessary to cut a piece of the composite to fit. Measure the length needed and cut a piece of the composite to fit. Use the leftover part of the board to begin the next row.

Begin the second row by adding adhesive to the side and bottom of the composite boards. Apply the adhesive to the bottom, as in the first row, then add a line of adhesive to the edge of the board facing the first row. Press into the first board using a mallet. This bonds the two boards together. Repeat this for all additional rows.
