How to Strip & Finish a Deck

Decks face constant abuse from the elements. Overtime they begin to look weathered as moisture and dirt penetrate the wood or composite materials. If the paint begins to wither on your exterior deck, or if the current finish becomes compromised, you may need to strip the covering completely and apply a new finish. If done correctly, you can make an old deck look like new.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix your deck stain stripper in a bucket according to the manufacturer's directions. Apply a small amount to a cloth or sponge and scrub a small inconspicuous area to test its effectiveness.

    • 2

Insert your deck stain stripper into a garden spray bottle and spray the entire deck surface. A pump sprayer gives you the easiest and most thorough application. After spraying, allow the stripper to penetrate the surface for about 20 minutes before you proceed. If the deck does not feel slippery after 20 minutes, spray the deck again and wait an additional 20 minutes.

    • 3

Remove the stripper. You can do this by hand, by scrubbing with a soft, damp sponge in the direction of the wood grain, or you can use a low-pressure rinse on a pressure washer. Repeat the stripping process if any of the stain remains after your initial effort.

Select an appropriate finish for your deck. An oil-based finish penetrates deeper into the wood and traditionally lasts longer, but a water-based finish can better withstand damp surfaces. So if you live in a humid environment, you may prefer a water-based finish. Wait a few weeks after stripping before you apply your finish. The manufacturer of the finish may have a specific recommendation for waiting time between stripping and finishing.

Hose down any surrounding vegetation to protect it from the effects of the chemicals in the finish. Apply the finish on a day when the weather is higher than 50 degrees, and when you expect the new few days to be dry. This enables the finish to dry properly. Put on rubber gloves and protective goggles.

Apply the finish to the entire deck surface using a dust mop, microfiber mop or roller mop. Allow the finish to dry fully and then add a second coat if you want to darken the finish.
