How to Make a Summer Balcony

Balconies add extra livable space to a home while offering the benefits of fresh air in a relaxed setting. Unlike a screened porch or partially covered patio, a balcony is fully exposed to the elements and the environment, but the summer months are an especially ideal time to enjoy such a space. Whether your balcony is small or sprawling, with the right furnishings and accessories, your summer balcony will quickly become a special space for getaways, right outside your back door.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant flowers that arouse the sense of smell and sight. Place pots of lavender, gardenias, mint or scented geraniums in coordinating planters on the balcony. Other fragrant options to consider are jasmine, roses and freesia. Use pots of annuals to infuse the balcony with color.

    • 2

Create a screen of vining plants by attaching the plants to a trellis or a wall.

    • 3

Place a small bistro table set for dining and create a separate seating area for lounging or conversation. Accessorize the chairs with pillows and seat cushions in a bright, fun pattern that represents the season of summer.

    • 4

Hang festive lanterns, string lights or paper lanterns in a fun pattern for a touch of whimsy with a function of lighting into the evening.
