How to Build a Concrete Deck Footing Tube

Elevated wooden decks are built on top of wooden piers. These piers extend down into the ground beneath the frost line to provide a stable base for the deck. When installed in the ground, the piers are encased in concrete to give them more support and protect the wood from rot due to exposure to moisture in the ground. Waxed fiber tubes are used to contain the concrete in the ground.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-1/2 ton excavator
  • Waxed fiber tubes
  • Rigid plastic footings
  • Level
  • Shovel

Instructions

    • 1

Dig trenches in the ground where you're installing the footings, going deep enough to extend below the frost line. Your local zoning board can tell you how deep this is. Use a 1 1/2 ton excavator to dig the trenches.

    • 2

Insert wax fiber tubes for the piers into plastic footings. The footings are wider than the piers, which prevents them from sinking into the ground because the weight is distributed over a wider area.

    • 3

Place the assembled forms into the trench. Have the footing tubes inspected if required by local building codes.

    • 4

Backfill the trenches with dirt. Check to make sure that the tubes are vertically straight, or plumb, and horizontally straight, or level, as you fill the trenches; adjust the tubes if necessary.

    • 5

Place footers turned upside down on top of the waxed fiber tubes to act as a funnel as the concrete is added.
