How to Make a Carport Into a Patio

If you don’t use your carport for parked cars, don’t let it sit empty and idle. Get the most out of the carport by turning the area into a patio. This is a fairly straightforward undertaking that can be completed in two to three days or less. And in addition to potentially increasing the value of your home, your carport patio will provide you with a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Things You'll Need

  • Broom or pressure washer
  • Outdoor rug
  • Trellis, shade sail or awning
  • Patio furniture set, lawn chairs or outdoor cushions
  • Accent pillows or comfortable cushions
  • Wind chime
  • Plants
  • Lighting
  • Chimenea or small fire pit
  • Water fountain

Instructions

Decide where in the carport you want the patio: an area naturally shaded by a large tree, the section where the house or some hedges provide privacy, or perhaps the entire carport. Get the space ready by clearing out items stored in the carport and giving it a good sweeping or pressure washing. Lay down an outdoor rug that can withstand the elements and be quickly hosed down and hung up to air-dry as needed.

Increase shade by adding a shade structure to protect from dangerous UV rays and also from rain, so that you will be able to enjoy the patio during good and bad weather. If it’s in the budget, have a trellis built. If you’re handy with tools, buy the raw materials and build it yourself with a few friends. Another option that proves less labor intensive and less expensive is to put up or have installed a shade sail or an awning.

Furnish the space. You can find patio furniture sets to fit every price range, from basic and inexpensive to ornate and costly. Choose one that is sturdy, dependable and the right size for your patio space. A cheaper option is to purchase lawn chairs or maybe even just a few outdoor cushions for sitting and lying on the rug. Or ask family or friends if they have any outdoor furniture to give away, then repaint it to make it look new.

A chiminea and some seat cushions make the patio inviting.

Add inviting accents to make the patio inviting and comfortable. Ideas include a few accent pillows or colorful cushions for the furniture, a wind chime and plants, such as a planter box or container gardens. Put in lighting to make use of the space after sundown. And add fire and water, which add drama. You can find either a chimenea (a freestanding fireplace) and large ornamental fountain or a small firepit and little tabletop fountain.
